As a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless love stories, each unique in its essence and beautiful in its own right. However, some moments stand out more singularly in my memory, resonating with a warmth and authenticity that is rare and incredibly special. April and Danny’s elopement at the stunning Fleets Escape in Margaret River was one such occasion—a day that not only celebrated their love but also marked a lovely reunion with old friends, including the groom himself.
Danny and I go way back to our school days, so having the opportunity to document his union with April, his soul mate, was beyond meaningful. For me, this was more than just another wedding; it felt like a gathering of family, an intimate and joyous occasion that I was lucky to be a part of.
A Setting Like No OtherNestled in the heart of Margaret River, Fleets Escape provided the perfect backdrop for April and Danny’s day. It’s a place that breathes tranquility and romance, exactly what the couple envisioned for their elopement. Their choice to celebrate here wasn’t by chance; tied deeply to their family roots in Margaret River and inspired by a sibling’s wedding at the same location, Fleets Escape held a sentimental value that made their day even more special.
The elopement was a reflection of April and Danny’s personalities: fun, casual, playful, yet deeply romantic. My approach—documentary with a touch of the whimsical—aligned perfectly with their vision, allowing me to capture the candid, heartfelt moments that unfolded. Armed with my 35mm Leica Minilux and Nikon digital camera, I set out to document their day in the most authentic light.
A highlight of the day, undeniably, was the spectacular sunset at Moses Rock cliffs—a breathtaking scene that April, Danny, and I raced to catch. The sky, painted in vibrant hues of pink, served as a canvas to their love story, creating images that were nothing short of magical.

April and Danny’s elopement stood out for many reasons, not least of which was their hands-on approach to organizing the event. Foregoing a traditional celebrant, they opted for a celebration that was distinctly them, embodying their DIY spirit and incredible talents. April, a self-taught cook, along with Danny’s help prepared all the wedding catering and even designed the wedding cake—tasks that would daunt many but were embraced wholeheartedly by their teamwork as a couple.
Their dedication to personalizing their day didn’t stop with the food; from the flowers by Zest Flowers to April’s stunning bridal gown from Coco & Lola, every detail was meticulously chosen to reflect their individuality and shared aesthetics.

Reflecting on their elopement, April and Danny shared that their official marriage at Perth’s registry office was a precursor to their true celebration with close family and friends at Fleets Escape. “We wanted an opportunity to celebrate our love in our way,” they shared, emphasizing the importance of intimacy, personal touch, and the presence of those dearest to them.

April and Danny’s elopement was a testament to what weddings could be—intimate, deeply personal, and reflective of the couple’s true essence. Their day was a celebration of love, family, and the beauty of coming together in places that hold special meaning.
To prospective couples looking for inspiration, April and Danny’s story is a reminder that at the heart of every wedding is love, and the ways to celebrate it are as boundless as your imagination.
